With its charmingly romantic theme and effective stage action, this Parisian-flavored libretto gave Franz Leh+r every opportunity to display his talent. "The Count of Luxembourg" is - with regard to its inventiveness, originality and instrumental coloring - on a par with Leh+r's other international successes. This film version offers a wealth of artistic entertainment.

German director Wolfgang Gl ck took the reins for this 1972 cinematization of Franz Leh r's 1909 operetta Der Graf von Luxemburg. The story, per the original stage work, takes place during the Parisian Mardi Gras, and concerns the financially strapped but sophisticated Count of Luxemburg, and his willingness to enter into a phony marriage in order to enable a Russian prince friend's union with an opera singer. Inevitably, numerous complications arise. The movie version stars Lilian Sukis, Eberhard Wachter, Lilian Sukis, Erich Kunz and Jane Tilden. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
