Product Description

View larger View larger Product Profile Dietary protein is the only nutrient group that yields an appreciable amount of amino acids upon digestion. Since amino acids are the building blocks needed to create functional and structural proteins in the body, from antibodies for immune function to collagen for skin and bones, it is essential to consume adequate amounts. But when the body lacks an adequate supply of nitrogen compounds like protein and amino acids, a state referred to as negative nitrogen balance, it is forced to break down muscle tissue to liberate reserves. The opposite situation, a surplus (i. e., positive nitrogen balance), is necessary for muscle growth. So in order to build or maintain musculature, extra dietary protein is needed. Beyond Amino Acids Whey not only contains a complete amino acid profile but also a host of other beneficial factors. These factors include alpha-lactalbumin, beta-lactoglobulin, lactoferrin, serum albumin, lysozyme, and immunoglobulins A, G, and M. In addition, whey protein provides more of the essential amino acids than other protein sources. Furthermore, about 25% of the amino acids in whey typically consist of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs). BCAAs are readily oxidized as an energy source during and after stress and exercise. Whey protein is a source of cysteine, a precursor to the vital intracellular antioxidant glutathione (GSH). GSH is depleted by oxidative stress that occurs during exercise, immune defense, and healing. Some researchers contend that whey protein plays a role in immune health by providing GSH precursors and increasing levels of GSH in tissue. Distinguishing Features: Whey Advantages Whey Protein: Concentrate vs. Isolate The debate about the best type of whey protein is a frequent topic of discussion on bodybuilding message boards. Typically, one form is advocated based solely upon the manufacturing method used to produce it. For instance, whey protein isolate (WPI) is commonly touted as being a purer form of whey because it typically goes through more processing steps. However, these processing steps can destroy and eliminate some of the components that provide additional benefits. Whey protein concentrate (WPC) generally undergoes gentle processing, leaving many of the other natural components intact. In addition, the majority of clinical studies investigating the effects of whey protein supplementation have been conducted using WPC. Ultimately, the type of whey protein chosen (WPC vs. WPI) may not be as critical as the quality of its sources and the other components added to the final product (such as sugar or artificial ingredients versus natural flavoring, etc). When evaluating the quality of a whey protein product, one should read the Nutrition Facts panel to check for the source of ingredients (e. g. non-GMO, rBST-free) and the presence/absence of additives like artificial flavors and sweeteners. Benefits Of Jarrow Formulas Whey Protein Jarrow Formulas Whey Protein is made with whey protein concentrate that is certified to be free of recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBST). It comes only from U.S. cows and is made in small batches in a facility that supports local dairy farms. It uses the high quality rennet enzyme system, which concentrates protein and preserves glutamine while producing a superior end product. Elevated temperatures are avoided during the manufacturing process. High temperatures and spray-drying can lead to the degradation of glutamine, which is an important amino acid for the synthesis of muscle tissue and for immune function. Finally, the product is ultrafiltered to remove greater amounts of lactose and fat from the final product, and it is free of any artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners. *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
