May 24th-26th 9-5pm Unified Police Training Center 3365 S 900 W SLC, UT 84119 Utilizing a combination of classroom instruction and hands on practice, Nikon Forensic School students are taught the basics of camera handling, and setup. The fundamentals of exposure, using shutter speeds and apertures as they pertain to crime scenes are reinforced. Advanced topics cover digital workflow, chain of custody, and tire track & footwear impressions. Students will be in the highly-trained hands of Ron Taniwaki - an instructor for Nikon Forensic Services. With over 30 years of experience in Professional Photography, Ron conducts trainings for the FBI, ATF, DOJ, and NCIS. This is a three-day course. Class will extend past daylight hours for a portion of the course. Lunch will be provided on the 24th. Snacks and drinks will be provide throughout the training. The following topics will be instructed in depth: Digital 101 Forensic Infrastructure From Silver to Silicon An introductory class designed for agencies, departments and evidence photographers, making the transition from traditional film based photography to digital imaging. Digital 102 Forensic Basic Photography The fundamentals This class is structured for departments that already own Digital SLR cameras. Students will review and practice the basics of exposure and camera handling techniques as they pertain to forensic photography. Digital 103 Forensic Advanced Photography What makes digital, digital The difference between a "snap shooter" and a photographer is knowledge of the craft. Students will learn how to dramatically improve the quality of their images through proper white balance and file type selection. Chain of custody, basic standard operating procedures (SOP) and digital workflows will be addressed. Digital 104 Forensic Camera Configuration To sharpen or not to sharpen, what was the question? Learn the recommended settings for optimizing digital cameras for Forensic image capture. An emphasis will be made on producing quality finished files directly in the camera, minimizing the possibility of defense challenges. Another benefit is a reduction of post processing time. Digital 201 Forensic Lighting Flash powder to flash power In this workshop, students will learn how to use a variety of lighting techniques for documenting a crime scene. Proper use of Speedlights (flash) both on camera and off. Balancing ambient light and flash exposures. Photographing large scale nighttime crime scenes, by painting with Speedlights and spotlights, Basic close up lighting. Digital 202 Forensic Close Up Photography Every little detail A presentation on close up techniques and tools to document fingerprints, footwear, and tire track impressions. How to select and position scales. Leveling cameras to reduce axial distortion Digital 203 Forensic Camera maintenance Cleanliness is next to godliness A course on the proper care and feeding of your digital equipment. Learn the correct methods for cleaning dust off the sensor. Prevent electronic failures with contact maintenance, and increase the lifespan of your batteries.
