This combination of water-soluble pencils and ink blocks provides a fascinating range of effects. The set is made in the U.K. by Derwent, a quality pencil manufacturer since 1832. The pencils can be used to create strong, vivid tones and then washed over for a translucent effect. The pigments are more intense than watercolor, though, and deliver more of an opaque ink effect. Once dry the colors are permanent. They are suitable for creating fine lines or broad strokes on paper and can be used as is, wetted, or on wet paper. The watersoluble ink blocks can also be used wet or dry to apply fine lines or broad strokes. When wet, they can be used like pans of paint, dipped in water and applied directly to paper or applied to a previously wet paper. The colors are intense and the fast drying time allows color to be built up. They can also be mixed with a clear medium for a glaze-like gel. The colors can be blended for a very wide range of tones. There are 22 pencils, 10 inktense blocks and 1 each of a sandpaper block, art sponge and pencil sharpener plus 2 grippers. The set is provided in a sturdy tin measuring 8-3/4"L X 7-1/4"W X 1-1/8"H that is easily carried wherever one chooses to use it. Because of the easy cleanup and high quality materials, the set makes a great gift for artists of any age or skill level.
