The Cold War Era begins in the 1950's, with a decade full of the clash between capitalism and communism. Fidel Casto leads the Cuban Revolution, ousting dictator Fulgencio Batista. The Korean War sees the DPRK and the Republic of Korea in conflict for three years, with western powers heavily involved. The nuclear arms race between the United States and Soviet Russia begins. The Soviet launch of the Sputnik I satellite ignites a space race between the USSR and the USA. At the end of Harry S. Truman's term in office, Dwight D. 'Ike' Eisenhower is elected president of the United States. Jackie Robinson becomes the first African American in Major League Baseball while the New York Yankees' roster features greats Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, and Joe DiMaggio. Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, and Carey Grant are just some of the stars who grace the silver screen. Rock 'n' roll emerges as a fusion of Rhythm & Blues, Jazz, Pop, and Country influences, and Elvis Presley is the undisputed King. Cars get bigger with classics like the Chevrolet Corvette and the Bel Air hitting the streets. And for the first time, more people in the United States live in the suburbs than anywhere else. Through and through, the fifties was a decade full of people, places, and events that changed the course of human history forever.
