Charles Darwin once referred to Ginkgo biloba as a "living fossil." It is the oldest of the trees in existence today! The Ginkgo species dates back to the Permian Period which occurred over 200 million years ago; sharing living space with the dinosaurs.
During WW2, there was a very old Ginkgo tree in Hiroshima. This tree was barely 1 km away from where the atomic bomb hit, August 6th 1945. Incredibly, the atomic blast and radiation was shrugged off by the tree - which continued to bud without any major signs of radiation poisoning! A testament to ginkgo's support of longevity.
Ginkgo biloba has a history of use in Chinese herbal medicine dating back almost 5,000 years. In modern times, Ginkgo is widely used to enhance cognitive ability, fight memory loss and protect against degeneration of the brain. It is believed that this is achieved by Ginkgo's incredible antioxidant potency as well as its ability to drastically improve blood flow (arterial, venous, peripheral and cerebral) and with it, improve the oxygen levels throughout the body. This is believed to be a result of the flavonoids presents in Ginkgo which dilate the micro capillaries in our circulatory system
