Prima di quella data, piu che di storia d Italia si dovrebbe parlare di storia degli italiani, o delle differenti entita statali alle quali ha dato vita il loro genio politico, gloriose come l Impero Romano, Genova, Venezia, Firenze, Milano e, nella misura in cui e stato plasmato o influenzato dall'eredita romana e dallo spirito italiano, il Papato. Cio non vuol dire tuttavia che, prima del 1861, l'Italia costituisse - secondo un'espressione dispregiativa di un politico francese - una semplice ''espressione geografica''. Per quanto di differente origine etnica e appartenenza politica, gli italiani, almeno dall'Impero di Roma, hanno parlato la stessa lingua (il latino, poi il ''volgare'' italiano), hanno praticato in larghissima maggioranza la stessa religione cristiana, hanno condiviso la stessa cultura e hanno originato una civilta con caratteristiche propie, distinta da quella del resto d'Europa e del mondo.
