Gah. Bug with browser extensions for at least the last 24 hours

Posted 05-12-2015 31:01 EDT

I cleaned up unused DNS records, removing the unused ws-us.pricezombie.com host. As it turns out, that host was still referenced as the site to check for product info. Its removal meant the browser extensions quit working once the host quit being cached by your local ISP name server.

I've readded the missing record, so all browser extensions will function again. Sorry about that.

Hardware transition partially completed

Posted 05-08-2015 58:32 EDT

Hardware load balancers are in place, and everything has migrated to the new web servers.

We're still copying images from the old image server to the new one. No ETA on that yet. Looks like we're about 1/6th of the way done.

New hardware coming online!

Posted 05-06-2015 27:20 EDT

Monday we increased our database capacity threefold. Over the next week, we'll be bringing online a much improved image server and several additional load balancers and web servers to increase our capacity. We've been over provisioning hardware, so you shouldn't notice too much of a difference, other than snappier image loading.

Mobile version of PriceZombie.com underway

Posted 04-24-2015 15:01 EDT

As you might have noticed, I started work on the mobile version of PriceZombie yesterday. The goal isn't to replicate 100% of the site, but rather to feature the parts that are useful to a mobile user - product search, and browsing through the stores.

Right now I have the front page, change region, and store views completed. I plan to work on product search, search results, and view product as time allows.

Two more stores: Kohl's and Reebok + hardware upgrades coming soon

Posted 04-21-2015 10:41 EDT

Two new stores added. Kohl's and Reebok. I've also added all the missing store images and corrected a minor issue with the watchlist in the browser extension.

In the next week or two we'll be doing a fairly major hardware upgrade. A lot more disk space for the database, much faster image server, and load balancers for the web servers. The non-US regions will also get a database upgrade to make it a lot snappier.

Lowest ever prices now available at the store level

Posted 04-18-2015 19:59 EDT

You can now browse to individual stores and browse their lowest ever prices. Previously this functionality was only available globally and you couldn't narrow it down by store.

Here's Amazon's.

Average sales rank now available

Posted 04-17-2015 20:48 EDT

The product chart and browser extensions now display average sales rank at 30d and 90d. I also draw out the average value on the chart with a length matching the duration. Hopefully this makes it easier to spot trends.

Average prices are now available for 30d, 90d, 180d, 365d!

In response to user suggestions, PriceZombie is adding something new, and we think, unique. Our price history charts are very good at showing price variations over time, but users also wanted to know a product's average cost.

We calculate weighted average over time. That is, we consider the amount of time a product has remained at a price point, as well as the numerical value of the price. For example, if a product has a high price of $150 for 4 months and a $100 average for 2 months, the average is $133, not $125.

You can find the average price for an item on the product view and live price drops for 30, 90, 180, and 365 days. Look for the blue "info" icon, click it to get detailed averages. The browser extension shows a 90 day average. Information in the extension is limited due to space constraints but you can click on the link to our website, in the upper right of the browser extension window, to see the full range of averages for that item. If a product has not been listed long enough for an average to be calculated, it will be marked NA.
