We're moving everything to SSL

Posted 03-16-2015 50:15 EDT

PriceZombie is being updated to use SSL. We're also in the process of updating the browser extension to also use SSL in the back end. SSL won't be required initially, but once the majority of browser extensions have upgraded, we can start to make it required.

As a user of the site and browser extensions, this will have no impact on you. It just makes your data on pricezombie.com safer.

Emergency database maintenance this morning

Posted 03-02-2015 16:22 EST

We had a very large number of new registrations over the weekend (yay) but that meant we needed to push up some maintenance we usually do in the wee hours of the morning to first thing this morning.

Sorry for the inconvenience, no further disruptions are expected.

Major update coming soon

Posted 02-20-2015 34:41 EST

I didn't want to go several months without an update on the blog, so I'll share with you what we've been up to so far in 2015:

We've been hard at work upgrading PriceZombie to support regions outside of the United States.

To pull back the curtain to our back room a bit, I want to explain how PZ is different from other price comparison and price history sites. Gathering and building a database of stores, products, current prices and sales ranks, and combining that data into price and ranking histories, is a massive undertaking. It requires a major investment in specialized knowledge and hardware.

There are all sorts of ways to reduce the investment - some sites use a data feed from only one retailer, some purchase data from third parties, some charge stores for displaying their products, etc.- and more than a few sites maximize profits by tracking your personal shopping habits and selling that information to marketers. That is our competition. That is not PriceZombie.

No one except PriceZombie has ever attempted such an ambitious project as what we have in the works. We are creating a site for the consumer, not an advertising vehicle for retailers and marketers. We're the consumer's answer to retailers using false sales, high manufacturers retail prices, dynamic pricing, and other tricks to get you to spend more than you have to for the things you need. PriceZombie's end goal is to display as many products from as many stores as we can, globally.

We're getting close to getting what I would consider to be the first pass in our entry into the global market. We have a functional website for several regions outside of the United States, and once we have a few months of data we will bring those areas live. I don't have a definitive timeline for when the first new region will be up and running, but if all goes well a rough guestimate would be somewhere around April.

Thank you for your suggestions, they have helped us add more useful features and grow our userbase, and thank you most especially for your support. We depend on everyone spreading the word about PriceZombie by recommending our site and extensions to your friends and family. With your support, PriceZombie will continue to grow into more regions, add more stores, and help you save more money.

Even more coupon codes!

Posted 01-25-2015 31:17 EST

Even more store are getting coupons imported now.

I found two stores are listing products instead of coupons (even though they are listed as "coupons"), so I'll be purging those out shortly...

Price tracker extension update

Posted 01-04-2015 48:30 EST

New feature now available for both Chrome and Firefox - click on the price type ("new" or "3rd party") to display only that price type. This makes the chart easier to read when there are many price points charted.

Massive site speed increase

Posted 12-22-2014 08:56 EST

This morning we upgraded our database server. The site should be noticeably faster. Preliminary testing seems to indicate a 50-70% decrease in page load times. Extension popup should respond near instantly again.
