The peace of an ordinary Wednesday morning was suddenly shattered by a massive explosion that destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah federal building, which had a childcare center on the second floor. It took most of the day to fully assess the damage. The final death toll was 168 with more than 500 injured. The fact that this day, April 19, 1995, was exactly two years after the tragedy at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco Texas, was apparent almost immediately, and many speculated that the two attacks were related. Although later reports shifted the focus to other possibilities, investigators quickly traced the explosion to a rented truck, and the truck to a suspect named Timothy McVeigh. McVeigh was ultimately tried, convicted...and then executed by lethal injection.
