El Gran Silencio are not the first Mexican group to rap, but they are the first to put together a truly Mexican hip-hop fusion. With trumpet, accordion, acoustic guitar, and violin carrying the instrumental weight, and rhythms ranging from to norteo styles, they provide a rootsy underpinning for their energetically urban and streetwise beats and vocals. Hailing from the northern center of Monterrey, the group tips its hat to Mexican tradition with wry insouciance. On the one semiballad, "Creaturas de Luz," the members prove that they can play pretty when they care to, but most of the time they hit hard, instantly establishing themselves as a group to be reckoned with in the world.
