En tiempos de los cristeros, Felipe, que estudia para licenciado en Guadalajara, vuelve a su rancho Los Pirules. La fanatica Engracia quiere que Felipe sea cura u al saber a su nieto ayudante del gobemador, lo corre del rancho, que es de ella. Los cristeros del malvado Macario saquean el rancho y dejan malherido a Roman. Maria es hecha presa y destinada a las Islas Marias, pero la libera Policarpo al meterse disfrazado de mendigo en el auto que la Ileva. Toda la familia se reune en el rancho. Felipe esta convenciendo a Policarpo de que se deje amnistier cuando Ilega Macario con su gente y se arma la batacera. Felipe resulta herido y al abrir su camisa, descubre en su percho una imagen religiosa que sorprende a Engracia, quien, alcanzada por un disparo, se reconcilia con su nieto antes de morir.
