The biggest grossing film of 1960, Spartacus starred Kirk Douglas in the story of the rebellious slave who led a revolt during the Third Servile Wars. The score was by six time Academy Award nominee Alex North (who would earn a nomination for Best Score), who also utilised a number of antique musical instruments to increase the dramatic effect.
