Candelilla Wax is a light brown to pale yellow vegetable wax found in the form of scales entirely covering a reed on the leaves of the Candelilla shrub grown in semi-arid climates. This plant grows wild and in great abundance on the rocky slopes and plains of Northwestern Mexico and Southwestern USA. Production for Candelilla Wax is year-round with somewhat less wax obtained in the wet season, July to September. It is a hard brittle, slightly tacky and lustrous wax with a distinctive odor. It is harder than Beeswax; but it is softer than Carnauba Wax. Candelilla Wax has multiple uses in various industries including personal care, food, pharmaceutical, and for industrial applications. It is used for making varnish and in cosmetic industry it is used as a component of balms (including lip balms), lotion bars, lipsticks, ointments. Candelilla wax can be used as a substitute for carnauba wax and beeswax. Though, with a melting point of 68.5-72.5 C, candelilla wax is mostly used mixed with other waxes to harden them without raising their melting point. Formulator has to be aware that this wax does not reach its maximum hardness for several days after cooling. Product could come in form of flakes or prills; form does not affect wax quality.
